MCA/DOLS for Practitioners – Improving Your Assessment Reports

Who should attend
Qualified practitioners in adult social care teams and health (Social Workers, OT’s, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Speech & Language Therapists, Dieticians, Commissioners, Reviewing Officers, Adult Safeguarding Practitioners) including Community Mental Health Practitioners & those making more significant decisions such as those relating to a person’s capacity to consent to medication, a new type of care package or any new significant decision.

Overview of the course
- The 5 guiding principles
- The framework set by the MCA for decision making
- The necessary steps set to support service users and patients to make decisions such as accepting a new or revised care package, consenting to or knowing how to use medication, take part in a planned programme of physiotherapy or occupational therapy within the framework set out by the MCA
- What is a formal 2 stage assessment of capacity
- Making a more formal best interst decision & when and where to record such decisions
- How to recognise when a formal assessment of capacity for a more complex decision is needed
- When to seek further advice such as regarding application to the Court of Protection
- The role of attorneys, deputies and IMCAs
- The implications of advance decisions
- How to identify the links between mental capacity and the protection of adults at risk from abuse
Course Objectives
By the end of this course learners will:
- Have an increased knowledge & understanding of mental capacity & the related legislations
- Have identified the criteria needed to be able to assess capacity & make best interest decisions on behalf of an individual or service user
- Be able to carry out a formal assessment of capacity
- Be able to make a formal best interest decision
- Know when & where to record such decisions
- Recognise when a formal assessment of capacity for a more complex decision is needed
